St Barnabas College is inviting parishioners, clergy and chaplains to a five-week course exploring how the Church can become a place of genuine welcome for LGBTIQA+ people.
Understanding and Connecting with Rainbow People and Communities will run on Wednesday evenings through October and into November at St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Walkerville.
Offered through the St Barnabas College Community of Learning, the course explores LGBTIQA+ people and communities in church and society, and asks how parishes can “connect to be genuinely inclusive, share wholeness of life in Christ, and recognise God’s gifts in each other”.
Over five sessions, participants will develop a deeper and broader understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual/aromantic people and communities, including how those identities intersect with other aspects of people’s lives.
The course is designed to be practical. Those who complete it will be equipped to offer Christian ministry to Rainbow people and communities “positively and effectively” — whether in a parish, a school, a hospital or another chaplaincy setting.
It will be led by Peter Burke, Community Development Consultant, and Caralyn Lammas, Coordinator of Education Programs at St Barnabas College.
Archbishop Bradly Billings highlighted the course in his September Pastoral Letter, writing that “everyone is encouraged to attend”.
The Community of Learning is the College’s program of short courses “for the whole people of God”, created to meet the particular learning needs of the Diocese of Adelaide and to support lay leaders, clergy and parish communities in their discipleship. Its offerings sit alongside modules such as A Welcoming Church and Pastoral Care for All.
