Did you know that 120 years after Bishop Reginald Harmer consecrated the Chapel of the Resurrection in the North Road Cemetery, a dedicated group of eight ladies called The Chapel Guild still lovingly cleans the brass and each week places fresh flowers on the altar?
The Chapel Guild was formed in 1905 by Miss Julia Farr and Mrs R F Leishman and included Mrs Hawkins, Miss Hawkins, Mrs Mayo, Miss Isobel Marryatt, Miss Caroline Jacob, Miss Wicksteed and Miss Merlin. They held occasional meetings and paid an annual subscription of 1/-.
From 1936 regular Guild meetings were held and Minutes taken.
Their work is still faithfully carried out by Guild members to this day.
Our Chapel is one of the finest examples of a mortuary chapel with its magnificent Venetian Glass mosaic depicting Christ at his Resurrection was designed and executed by Mervyn Napier Waller.
The Chapel provides a place of peace in our busy world, where funeral services are held, and where visitors to the Cemetery can pause for prayer and to quietly reflect on the lives of those who have gone before.
The Guild will always welcome new members to enjoy the privilege of caring for this beautiful space.
The Annual General Meeting of the Guild is held following the annual All Souls Day Eucharist in the Chapel, during which the names of deceased loved ones are read out.
